POWER TO THE PEOPLE !
Interview with DJ Copper Top (artist formerly
known as Duracell DJ)
Just look at the tracklisting on her "The Vinyl Conflict" release!
That is why she's called Copper Top :)))
Her philosophy is simple - dance. Electro-dance. Here's an electric interview.
Get the information and then, if you're in US Midwest -get energized.
why duracell? (orange sector? you hate
bunnies? else?)
Well.. actually it is DJ Copper Top. I couldn't take
the name Duracell. I guess the battery company didn't think
I make such a good spokeperson. Nevertheless we grabbed Copper Top,
which is the same, of course. I took it because.. frankly, I never
stop. Also a DJ is someone who gives dancers energy, a battery, if
you will.
contrary to some other musical genres, an
institution of DJ is not too highly regarded in goth/dark world.
Comment?
are you kidding.. I feel like Jesus Christ. Every time
I go out I am stoned, crucified I guess. The bands don't like me
because it makes them mad that there is one less spot to be signed
by the small amount of labels out there, and the DJ's, well they
are mad because they don't understand why it wasn't them.
Frankly I think it is rediculous. All these bands are putting out these trance
and techno influenced tracks and singles. I mean it's great, but at what point
did they not think that darker DJ's would start to mix too. In the end I think
having DJ mixes will be good for both the bands and the DJ's.
Unusual idea for electro
scene to release DJ mixed disc. Who is responsible for "The
Vinyl Conflict"?
Well, Mark the label owner, is responsible
for the concept. I suppose I had some influence in the end. I am
very committed to him because I believe in how he does things and
the label's philosophy. Really, Mark had the insight to
see that putting out a DJ mix would be a new and exciting way to
promote the music and the artists. Simple.
You have been to Europe recently. Have you
noticed any differences in 'dark' scene here and there?
Actually, it has been one year since my last trip to
Europe. You know, I was having a bit of shock over there, but every
time I got into some dark club... I thought... I am home. I am always
at home in those dark clubs. It is not so different, except I see
in some European countries, like Yugoslavia, they seem a bit more
sophisticated, oddly enough, than say, Germany. What I mean is that
those Germans still really love that electro-industrial sound and
have not taken so quickly to the more synth and future pop. The Yugo's
seem to more up to date on the latest music. Maybe it is the whole
bootleg market??!!
Nevertheless, Europe just came to me, recently. DJ Zlaya (Belgrade)
had moved here to the USA in February and we are now partners. Furthermore,
the band Endymion (Belgrade), also signed to Tonedeaf Records,
in some strange way, is in Philadelphia, because their new single will be released
shortly, and Zlaya and myself will help to promote that as well.
One more thing.. those German's do not dance. They like to look at the floor,
grunt, and stomp back and forth. Still they are better than those damn English!!
(joking, kind of)
Which song from your set has had the best reception
by the crowds in US and Europe?
Well, this last year, Haujobb 's "Penetration
(future fuck mix)" has had the best reception in the USA and
in Europe for me. It is a phenomenal track, and still I use it for
it's great mixing in and out of tracks..
Which song(s) is/are your all time favourite?
Album(s)?
Front 242's Happiness.. ANYTHING Front
242. I also still love KMFDM, Nine Inch Nails, Thrill
Kill Kult,.... Of course, now it is really more the new stuff
for me, that really locked me in.. Apoptygma Berzerk, Covenant,
VNV Nation, Funker Vogt, Icon of Coil. But I must say now
that I love, love, love, the newest trance-style offerings of EBM
like Nebula H, Implant, Headscan, Massiv In Mensch,
XPQ 21, God Module, Negative Format, Form, NG-PRO, The Sepia, Control.org and
so many more, and the amazing synthpop of Melotron, Merge,
Diorama, Pulcher Femina, Echoing Green.. anything on A Different
Drum, of course!
How did you end up in goth/electro scene? Influences?
In the eighties I was a new wave girl.. I hung out
in gay bars dancing to Soft Cell, Pet Shop Boys, New
Order, Talk Talk, OMD, and Depeche Mode..
then I moved to Indianapolis. I met some girl in a club, and she
took me to a "goth" club.. I heard Front 242..
nothing has been the same since that day. hahahaha.. now, 13 years
later.. it is still the same, and amazingly I have not aged either,
but I digress.
If you'd choose a different music genre to spin, which
one would it be?
That's easy. Trance and maybe Techno, although the
style of mixing trance is very different than techno. I use both
styles in mixing EBM.
Any other interests besides music?
Beating and starving Zlaya... and when I am
not doing that.. I paint, draw, you know the whole art thing. I also
love to write, and finally, and most importantly.. I love to dance.
Favourite painter? Writer?God?
Matisse is my favorite painter, there is not
other that even comes close to me. Dostoyevsky is my favorite
writer.. and God is God.
Which science-fiction gadget would you like
to have?
I want one of those damn time machines.. me and
Z would go back to the 80's (per his request) and he would have some
new
wave thing going on and a bit later to The Chicago Wax Trax era
, I would hang out of course.. and then we could zip back to the
turn of the century (for me) and Z could watch me get in a bunch
of trouble with all those militant feminist anarchists in Greenwich
Village... ya, a time machine...
What will happen to you in near future?
Z and I are going to Chicago only to dance in about
48 hours. We will talk alot. I may have to slug him.
What will happen to music in near future?
I really think that EBM, synthpop, and much industrial
will continue to move more away from gothic, gothic metal, and darkwave..
it is inevitable. The divorce is coming.. due to irreconcilable differences.
Other than that... hahahaha... do I look like God??
Thanks for the time and good luck on your tour.
Ya, me and Zlaya are traveling all over the USA and
then there will be Europe (again)! Thank you as well! I enjoyed this
really funny interview. Good luck with Electromeda project!!
