P
– Yes, NOW I really love VNV Nation, they are a GREAT band
and it is an honour to be compared to them, but genuinely we are
NO copy band, because back in 2001 when I was writing “Nephesh”
I had not heard ANY VNV Nation. Sigve had for sure,
but I had not.
SV – We are about good melodies, and good
heartfelt lyrics, and so is Ronan, so this already makes
us similar…
S – Yes if anyone is to blame for bringing
VNV into Pride and Fall it is me, but I just write the lyrics and
sing I don’t write the music, and I know that Per
was not listening to VNV at that time, so we think it is a little
unfair to compare us to VNV Nation let alone call us a copy band!
P – But at the end of the day, to be compared
with VNV is a big compliment so we are very happy with this. If
it means that people think we are anywhere near their standard then
we are very happy.
SV – If people want to link us with VNV Nation
that is their choice but ultimately we just want to do our own thing
and let our music and our concerts do the talking!
[there is a general murmur of consent and
approval of this last comment, it is obviously something they feel
very passionately about]
J – OK, thank you guys, that’s
really answered my questions, and thanks for being so honest on
that last one especially.. The final question.. What dreams do you
still have to achieve for the future of Pride and Fall?
S – We would like to be
renowned for our live shows..
J – How much of the
songs do you play live then?
P – Actually it is mainly the drums, arpeggios
and basses that are not played live, as in most electro music. I
try to play as much of the synths, pads and strings live as possible.
Playing live is really important, I dont want to be that guy hanging
around a computer on stage .. I think thats the worst things about
many electronic acts.
SV – I play my guitar!
S – I sing live!
P – Yeah, I play live and sometimes I fuck
up ..like tonight!
SV – We are growing as producers and musicians
so we are looking forward to the future and we hope you will hear
more and more of Pride and Fall. And to be honest right now our
major dream is to produce the BEST album we can, and get out there
and tour so people can get to hear us for theirselves and make their
own minds up instead of believing what they read in the press!
P – Yes we hope people will give our new
songs a good listen, we aim to make them as good as we possibly
can!! We want to make GOOD albums, complete albums. Albums that
are good all the way through. To be proud of all the tracks that
we have put on the album.
Here in Edinburgh the crowd have been so lovely and we have really
enjoyed our time here, we would like to repay all our new fans by
doing the best album we can…
After thanks and goodbyes, I leave
the boys finishing their rider and drying off their stage-soaked
clothes on dodgy old radiators… Stefan passes me on the way
out of the back stage, it is time for the band review, and there
will be no drinking and debauchery until the live set has been analysed
and reviewed.. Later Per, Sigve and Svein join me for drinks mingling
freely amongst the Edinburgh crowd. They get a lot of female interest,
they get a lot of praise. This crowd is a staunch VNV crowd, but
they’ve been mightily impressed with the Pride and Fall boys.
As, I have to say, have I. They are amongst the friendliest and
most humble bands I have ever met. Sweet is not the word.. They
are genuine, funny, very rock and roll (pass the snakebite now Sigve..)
and I hope that you will give them another chance. Because I believe
they have a genuine passion for what they do, and LIVE they are
really impressive. Pride and Fall, so much more than just another
EBM band.. They’re future Rock Stars of our scene, and I for
one, wish them all the luck in the world…
If anyone deserves success.. these boys do.
