SHADOWS IN THE DARK (a.k.a [:SITD:] ) – Stronghold

It took me a couple of seconds to comprehend the fact that “Stronghold” is the first [:SITD:] album. It took me even longer to get adjusted to [HURT] and [VENOM] tracks that are not signature hard-hitting anthems but flowing songs with solid dose of future pop infused.

I didn’t receive that surprise quite well, it must be said, probably because of preconceived image and sound of Gelsenkirchen (GER) duo that was stuck in my head since SEPTIC III compilation. Talking to my Electromeda comrade DJ Cyberchrist who’s even more of an expert on [:SITD:]
('Laughingstock’ review) revealed he feels the same. Could be we’re a pair of old inert geezers so hooked up on industrial that we need a heavy hit of drumline to get our brain moving or we’re experienced old geezers knowing the core from the fluff perhaps? Good question…hm…

Speaking of hard stuff, don’t get us wrong – there’s a fair share of blood pumping songs of course, the best music on the album must be mentioned: [2nd DEATH]: Voxless, flawless, merciless. Megahits [SNUFF MACHINERY] and [LAUGHINGSTOCK] are also included and in exclusive album version. Additional points given for that! But grade and overall quality of this release rested on supporting cast. Tough decision though. Every track has its own taste and design. You might find a touch of Suicide Commando here and a just a hint of Funker Vogt there, yet still, this is [:SITD:] album, with all of its harsh melodics and good lyrics. Slight imperfections included.

Yes, their firstborn could have been a masterpiece, one of the best albums of the decade. But, more speed on [LOCKED IN SYNDROM], stronger melody on [ROSE-COLOURED SKIES], more convincing lyrics on [LEBENSBORN] would have made “Stronghold” stronger. Nevertheless, it is a creation that put Shadows In The Dark on top of the industrial newcomers list. To rephrase: [:SITD:] is the best new industrial band.

Don’t mind my words, I’am just an old geezer.
