ASCII.DISKO – Ascii.Disko
I don’t know about you, but I really don’t
like that ‘new primitivism’ style in fashion. You know,
retro Adidas, Puma, handbags ‘a la East Germany’ design.
Yes, and complete new line from Diesel.
What does it have to do with ascii.Disko? I hope nothing fashion-wise – but
music could find an ear among that crowd. It has enough electricity and retro-sity
+ 303/808 acidic touches. The rest is pure, simple, standard 80-ies synth music.
No complains about that. And about that I’m going to write a bit more:
Have you ever heard Sven Vãth’s “Dein
Schweiss”? Just add a level of energy more, more youthfulness
and you have 100% pure ascii.Disko. Good? Of course.
If that didn’t bring you close to their sound, try this:
comparison 2: DAF. Deduct a layer of darkness and instead
of heroine mix in some ecstasy. Good? I thought so.
And the songs are mostly hoppy electronics, in balance between precision of
synth lines and roughness of effects. Kat and Dan Holc take
full use of technological advancements in music enriching the basic Kraftwerk/Moroder framework
with sequencing and signature 808 steroids. Retro but fresh; classic, yet innovative.
Honestly speaking though, nothing substantially new in musical department was
produced and without good melodies ascii.Disko would have been a flaw,
since for two decades now, we can enjoy computerised bongs and bleeps. But
the gamble paid off, because of what holds this release: superb tracks like ‘Einfach’ and ‘Immer’.
Luckily, there are also ‘Aldimarkt’ and ‘Moi, je veux’ to
rescue us from boredom invoked by the songs played before them ‘Jetzt’ and ‘Jack
your body to the beat’. Slow songs don’t work in ascii.Disko -
too many repetitions of downtempo sequences just kill the fun. Three in total
is more than enough. Nine remaining could/should be played on electro nights,
goth nights, raves or in commercials. Any use of ascii.Disko music
is welcome and recommended. Building on the old, proven values almost never
fails. Kat D.D. Rock and Dan Holc have enough quality to
support that statement.
