COVENANT – Bullet (single) + DVD (special)
Second single from “Northern Light” brings
all fears to reality: signing to mainstream record company does mean
commercialization, compromises, mediocrity.
Those days are long gone, the glory days when as a bonus track
you get “Babel”,
or as a remix “Voices optocoded”. The youth of today gets something
else.
By standard, included is club version of the title track, and it is a good
one. Simply boosted bass line, nothing more, but enough, since “Bullet” is
an excellent song. “Radio edit” adds unnecessary mutilation (like
that will increase the air play?) and literally nothing else. The last Covenant
produced track is “Atom Heart” with interesting timing of beat
and main theme. Problem is in lyrics and Simonsson’s singing,
both containing too much pathos.
The worst is yet to be presented: “Le Dust Sucker Mix” is a nice funky track,
reminiscent of Chic (luckily without vocals). How does that fit into the idea,
style and philosophy of Covenant, I don’t know. Reaching towards different
groups of music-lovers? Trying to put their music in basketball commercials??
Something else?
Don’t be surprised if you hear that “Ellen Allien Flow Mix” has
been aired on retarded ‘your favorite party radio station – 24hrs
non-stop party!’ frequency. It very well fits there. With samples of
(I must mention, excellent) lyrics taken completely out of context, and added Ms.
Allien annoying singing/retelling of abovementioned, the result is simple:
catastrophe.
There is a hope that Covenant had no power in choosing people that did the
remixing. I also hope that they weren’t asked for permission to publish
this single, because this is simply and sadly, the worst release by the Swedish
trio ever.
