COVENANT – ‘Northern
Light’
And they are back!
To add even more delight, Joakim
Montelius is back as well! After unfocused "United
States Of Mind", blades are resharpened, cryotank is in
full service - "Northern Light" is bright and cold.
Moving out of the chrysalis of electro (future pop?) genre, Covenant spreads
it’s wings: production is more meticulous, approach to composition more
serious, music precise, lyrics cold as ever. 'Prometheus', 'Bullet' – note
the humane touch; 'Call The Ships To Port', 'We Want Revolution' – instant
hits; 'Winter Comes', 'Atlas' – pure Covenant. Somewhat surprise is choir
of children (angels?) on 'Invisible & Silent' and addition of Steve
Stoll to Holy Trinity on 'Rising Sun'. Eleven songs, each bringing it’s
colour to this full, rich issue, but yet not strong enough to enlighten…
We are still waiting for an album, an extraordinary album that will catapult
the electro sub-culture into mainstream orbit. Covenant CAN
produce such album. "Northern Light" is a good start, but leaves
them in a no man’s land. Which path will be chosen is yet for us to see.
I heartily wish to Covenant, as Ronan Harris did
years back, that the road rise before them.
