THE DEVIL
LADY – Volume 1: The Awakening
Another story of split personality. Fashion model
by day, Jun turns into a different model by night. Two
of them, actually: the first, a house-size model – voluptuous
and deadly Devil Lady; the second – skyscraper level in height,
much less beautiful / much more deadly ‘Giga Effect’ killer.
Cliché after cliché: she hates her Devil-self, being
shy and introvert role-model to younger peer, lives through the
gruesome nights as through nightmares; pursued by stalker from
some shady government agency, lady who actually introduced her
other self; after attemted suicide find herself in protective facility – white
room with a video-camera…
More than enough of already seen. Including the scene setup.
And now the good stuff:
Metamorphosis – shredding clothes, claws, wings, pornstar-type
body ( suggested for 17+ audience)
Battle scenes – ugly, fast, lot of blood, close camera,
effective kills ( suggested for 17+ audience)
Monsters design – really good creations, proves the known
quality of Go Nagai horror ( again, there is a reason why this
anime is for 17+ audience).
The story has it’s qualities. I sincerely hope
that now, after standard introduction, we’ll encounter much
more interesting plots ( relationship between Jun and Kazumi(??!))
more death, more monsters, and that Good wins in the end. Or not.
Promising ‘a la David Lynch’ scene from the
last episode gives hope. And suicide attempt was nicely created. ‘The
Devil Lady’ has potential, but we’ll see, it is not
enough just to have excellent horror motifs. We need more.
